You have probably imagined your own research project to be presented in the same way as science is presented in National Geographic or Scientific American: photorealistic, 3D images that spark the curiosity and capture interest.
Then you have realized that creating those 3D images is impossible to do yourself since it will take so much time from your "actual" work (doing research) and you know that your supervisor is not that keen to fund an expensive 3D animation that will be obsolete already before it is finished.
That is why I have developed this animation course for you and your group. Because I know that you, your colleagues, department, institution, faculty and university are interested in stunning animations showing exciting new research. But above all, your research project deserves to be animated.

We will meet four times, you only need to attend each session once. The will be on-demand meetings as well if you run into any software problems during the course

How is the course structured?
The course is very practical, and you will learn a new set of skills. You will get access to tutorials and exercises that gradually build up your abilities to create 3D graphics suited for journal covers and explanation videos. At the end of the course, you will have made a journal cover and a 10s animation describing your research project.
We will have biweekly meetings to ensure steady and adequate progress.
The course will give you basic knowledge in 3D-modelling, shading, lighting, animation, rendering, compositing, simulation, and video editing. You will also get training in sculpting and non-photorealistic rendering.

Q. Hmm, you represent a company, could you really examine and give me the credits?
A. Of course not, but if you complete the course I will give you a certificate that clearly states the amount of work you have done in order to earn the credits. So far around 250 students have completed courses I have given and received their credits. If you will run in to problems, please let me know.
Q. Is this some easily earned credits? I mean, I pay a registration fee, then you must be happy and just let me pass?
A. Absolutely not, In order to pass and complete the course you must do the assignment, attend all sessions and complete all on-line modules. It is equivalent to 3 weeks of full time work.
Q. What will happen if I cannot complete the course this semester?
A. No problem, you will get another chance to complete the course next time the course is given, free of charge of course. This happens quite often among my students, don't worry.
Q. How could I pay for the course?
A. I prefer that your supervisor/institution pay the registration fee. You pay by invoice when the course opens.
Q. Why should I attend this course and pay for information that I could find for free on the internet?
A. Since I have designed the course based on the needs of a PhD-student who would like to animate and present their research project. Meaning no time for extra fluff or hours of explanations; only what you need to know in order to make stunning scientific images and animations.
Q. How long time do I have access to the on-line material?
A. You will have access to the material for life (or as long as you would like to).
Q. What is Visualize your Science?
A. Visualize your Science AB is a company based in Espoo Finland (FO: 2754269-4), It was founded by Andreas Dahlin in April 2016. Visualize your Science AB helps scientists to communicate their research more effectively with better images, illustrations, visualizations and animations.
Andreas Dahlin has a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, Uppsala university from 2005. He thereafter worked as a project leader and researcher in an interdisciplinary project at Uppsala university where his group developed a new microdialysis catheter for clinical use. He has always been interested in presenting science with high quality, pedagogical images.
In 2011, he started a PhD-course at Uppsala university with the name Visualize your Science where he shows tips and tricks on how students could visually communicate their research more effectively to both the general audience and peers. The course quickly became the most popular, non-mandatory graduate course at Uppsala university. So far, more than 90 students have won poster prizes in international conferences.
At the beginning of 2016, Andreas founded Visualize Your Science AB (Visualizeyourscience.com) and decided to dedicate all his time to help researchers become better science communicators using illustrations, visualizations, and animations.
